You can speak French and still miss your level.
TCF Canada is scored on a rubric France Éducation International never shows you. Practise the real writing and speaking tasks, graded on that rubric, and find out where you stand.
Your French isn't the only thing being scored
Every answer is given a level first, A1 to C2. Miss one B2 requirement and the task caps at B1, no matter how good your French is. Those requirements aren't in the official guide.
EO tâche 2
Good questions aren't enough. B2 needs real back-and-forth interaction.
EO tâche 3
A clear position isn't enough. The rubric wants the other side's view and arguments too.
EE tâche 1
Most candidates only reach B1 here. B2 and C1 are rare, because tâche 1 is a short, everyday message, not a showcase for advanced vocabulary or complex sentences. Less is more: cover every element of the prompt and keep the register right.
None of this is about knowing more French. What's more important is knowing what each task is really testing, and the official guide won't teach it to you.
What you get back
Expression écrite, tâche 2. Target level B2.
The task
An article for a neighbourhood blog recounting a recent cooking class, plus the writer's impressions of it. 120–150 words.
The response
Why it caps at B1
The experience is told clearly and the past tenses are used correctly, but every sentence stays short and simple, the connectors don't go beyond mais and parce que, and the closing opinion is stated rather than developed. B2 wants that reaction argued, with richer connectors like cependant or ce qui m'a surpris, c'est que.
Mistakes
- registre Mais le professeur expliquait chaque étape clairement → Cependant, le professeur expliquait chaque étape clairement — starting a sentence with "mais" is spoken register; "cependant" fits written French better.
Wherever you're starting from
First time sitting it
TCF isn't cheap, and your time is precious. Preparing in the wrong direction costs more than you think, and a sitting you have to book and pay for again.
The most important step in any exam is knowing what it marks you on, and for TCF that isn't published anywhere. TCF Coach is where you learn it: every task type, graded against the real rubric, instead of spending $400+ to sit an exam you don't yet understand.
Retaking after a miss
You did the work, and the score still came back short. Nothing in the report told you why.
Studying harder in the same direction is the slow, costly way to discover it was never a French problem. TCF Coach shows which criterion capped your level on each task, so you understand exactly what to improve for your next attempt.
Built by someone who failed this exam twice
I needed B2 for immigration. Two attempts came back the same: 9 in speaking, 13 in writing. It took a third to get speaking to 12.
My French wasn't the problem. None of the tutors I tried, even a former examiner, could tell me what a B2 speaking answer actually sounds like. I had to figure out tâche 1 and tâche 3 myself, through trial and error, one expensive attempt at a time.
TCF Coach is the tool I wish I'd had, so you don't have to retake the exam twice and spend months preparing, the way I did.
Why it's trustworthy
- FEI's real level → /20 bands, based on their official marking scheme, not a generic score.
- Built from the personal experience of candidates who passed TCF Canada.
- Practice questions that align with the real TCF exam style.
- Prompts at the real word counts and timings.
Tests 1 and 2 are free. Both sections.
Four full tests, free. A subscription opens all 80, from $21.99 CAD/month, cancel anytime. Sitting the exam again costs $400+.
Not sure you're at B1 yet? Seeing the gap early still helps. It tells you what to aim for. Start with the four free tests, add a month if you want more, and commit to longer only once it's paying off.
